Fiber Artist Friday: Ray from Knitivity

November 20, 2009

Today’s Fiber artist is Ray Whiting from I hadn’t heard of Ray before Lisa suggested him for a feature, but I have since become very glad that she has. Not only is he a talented dyer who runs a great shop, but he also has had the life altering experience of living through hurricane Katrina.

He kept a journal throughout the event and it’s posted here. Warning, don’t start reading this unless you have some time on your hands. It’s not short but it is very compelling and poignant.

Knitivity itself has some very interesting features, for instance it has the only superwash lace weight yarn I’ve ever seen. (And now that I’ve seen, I seem to have developed a burning desire to own- such is the life of a yarn addict.) He dyes all of his yarns in really intriguing colorways; everything from Dirty Mechanic to Cats Paw Nebula. He also dyes to match artwork and photographs. You have to see the results – amazing!

Another feature that I haven’t seen before Knitivity is Dicey Knitting which is basically implementing special dice instead of a pattern. This sounds like it could be a lot of fun, but you have to be committed to it. I’m a control freak so it would take a lot of effort for me to just sit back and let the dice tell me what to do, but you know, I think I would enjoy the process.

Ray also supports local charity, and if you have a local charity you knit (or crochet) for and you are wondering if you could get a discount or bulk deal on some of your supplies, check back later on, because there are details during the interview.

Now to finish off the summary of this great guy and his lovely store, what kind of shopper would I be if I didn’t share some of the deals??

I really enjoy this stocking, it just looks like so much fun! Ray knit this stocking personally and is giving it away. To win the contest all you have to do is either buy 2 skeins of sock or lace *or* $50 worth of stuff.

The reason you only have to buy 2 skeins of sock or lace yarn, is that the 2 will no longer put you over the $50 mark because they’ve been discounted $3!

And… if you buy a skein or more of “Dura-lace yarn” (that’s the superwash laceweight I was talking about before) you can get the pattern for the Limberlost Trails Shawl free!

P.S Remember to check us out at 6pm when I have a Q&A with Ray himself!

Sunday Morning Confessions

November 8, 2009

Alright, so I’ve been crazy this week, but I do have one confession:

I am beyond behind on my NaNoWriMo novel. Mostly because I interrupted one book to start the “new” novel off, and I keep getting ideas for the interrupted book. Hmm… maybe that tells me something…

My current work in progress is a whole night-time outfit for a bear. I am in the Long Island Knitting and Crochet Guild, and last meeting they handed out stuffed bears, the deal was that we would dress them, and there would be a contest for cutest outfit, then all of the resulting bears would go to charity.

Now, I think it’s great to donate the bears to a charity, but the contest does make it more interesting. So now I am finishing off the nightshirt, and then I’ll work on a nightcap, a robe and slippers and finally I want to make the bear his own (yes he’s a boy) stuffed bear to cuddle with.

I will post pictures as the items actually get finished- hopefully the nightshirt will be done sometime today!

I also want to play around with yarn dyes later, which should be lots of fun! I have a new group of colors I want to try to create- the Poisonous Plants line. Lots of deadly names, with the colors coming from the flowers. We’ll see how that comes out.

Web of Yarn Wednesday:

August 5, 2009

Oh,, how I love thee, let me count the ways…

Sorry, I think the heat is beginning to melt my brain. 😯

Anyways… is a great resource when you know exactly what yarn you need; but need to find out if someone actually produces it the way you want it.  (I really hope I’m not the only one who does that!)

The site is basically a huge database of yarns that you can search by: Brand, Yarn Weight, Fiber Content, Texture, Color Family, Color Number, Color Name or Yarn Name.

So, remember that cotton greeny-blue yarn that you loved so much at that yard sale, but it didn’t have a label and there was only one skein? Here’s your best chance of finding it.

I hope you’ll excuse me for saying – HOW COOL IS THAT???

Ahem, please enjoy, and as always…

Happy Stitching!!

Web of Yarn Wednesday:

August 5, 2009

Okay, so today I’d like to bring up a couple of excellent reference site. The first one was one I was referred to continuously when I started crocheting, and though at the time I found it helpful, I really do believe that this site becomes more helpful the more experienced you are.

Seriously, as a beginner the ‘yarn weights’ section was the only one i truly found helpful, but it has everything, crochet and knitting symbols, standard sizing/body measurements, tips for reading patterns (with charts of all the abbreviations) and my favorite, designer info.

I do like their ‘skill level’ definition, but I think that as I go through my classes I’ll have to create my own, you know (classes 1-5: yarn apprentice, classes 6-12; yarn student, classes 12-22: yarn scholar, classes 22 and on: Master of Yarn)

I like it. Might have to switch yarn student and yarn apprentice though. 😉

Happy Stitching Everyone!

Sunday Morning Confessions

August 2, 2009

Bless me reader for I have sneezed– I mean sinned.

In the past week I have:

-started waaayy more projects than I have hope of finishing shortly (7 at last count)

-purchased so much sugar and cream, I then had to purchase a tote to hold it all, and it still won’t all fit. (is excessive yarn-buying ever really a sin?)

-have been wracked with indecision on which KnitPicks interchangeables set I should get. I like wood normally, but would it be too sticky? Maybe the nickle, but what about the new Zephyrs?

-have spent almost as much time reading as I have creating.

-have debated starting my novel again. (because the reading apparently shows that I have too much free time!)

-have spent more money on safety eyes and buttons than I spent on the whole bag of sugar and cream, which was the whole of my yarn purchase this week.

Despite the slightly conflicting sins of buying too much yarn and spending too much money on accessories, there are some doozies here. I think I have to have a giveaway as penance.

Give me a day or two to come up with a good prize and we will have some fun! 🙂

Saturday Review: Maggi Knits ‘Linen’ Yarn

August 1, 2009

Okay so today I was actually going to review the ‘Wool in the Woods’ rayon that I’ve been working on with my shrug turned cardigan.

Alas as I found ye…. Well, the company is closed as far as I can find out. They are no longer making yarn at any rate and the yarn is almost impossible to find any on the internet.

I felt it was a little unfair to tell you guys about this great yarn I just found, and follow it up with “na-na  na-na-na you can’t get any!” So… I decided to go with a yarn I love an equal amount, though I found it quite a while ago:

maggi 1

Maggi Knits ‘Linen’ – which is, technically speaking,a cotton linen blend. Hence the quotes.

I really do love this yarn, though it can be tricky to work with due to it’s loose ply. I would recommend working it on wooden needles if knitting, because that got rid of the slight splitting problem I was having.

If you crochet, go for it! I really love this yarn as a crochet medium.

maggi 2

In either knitting or crochet though, I would recommend using a tighter gauge than is specified on the label, I have gotten wonderful results with size 4 needles and a size G hook. You could go a bit larger, but it looks messy to me. (That’s probably just me though.) 🙂

My Rating: 4BallslulzUmmm.. can you rate yarn by yarn balls? I don’t know, so I’ll try it anyway. 🙂
