Some Inspiration

June 9, 2009

As creativity guru and author of The Artists Way, Julia Cameron would say: sometimes you have to fill the pond. Anyone who creates something out of nothing understands this. Whether you are creating a masterful muffin sans recipe, knitting without a pattern, or even designing a marketing display, it always helps to have something to work with.

It always seems that when I come up with a new design, it’s not new at all, simply pieced together from different places.  Here I will try to share with you some of the things that stick out when I am going about my day, all unsuspecting.

Normally, it’s little things like the Daylily Banglefrom Anthropologie. How cool would that look crocheted? (Knitted would make it too loose, don’t you think?)daylily bangle

A lot of the time it’s a book. Now, don’t get me wrong,  I read much more than classics, actually classics are at the shallow end of my reading pool. However, I do seem to get more inspiration from them.

This week it’s the Pillow Book by Sei Shonagon. Written 1000 years ago in Japan by a woman whose life was lived inside a palace, its a wonderful book cunningly written, but my favorite part is the little lists; they provide endless inspiration (in my humble opinion, at least.) Here’s an example:

“Things that look ordinary  but become extraordinary when written- Strawberries. The dew plant. The prickly water lily. Spiders. Chestnuts. Doctors of literature. Postgraduate students. Acting Master of the Empress Dowager’s Palace. The arbutus tree.”

I have no idea what some of these things are, but I still sense a small joke in here. A doctorate does tend to seem more impressive on paper than in person, doesn’t it?

This is what I’ve been checking out lately, but please, let me know if there’s something that I’m missing…. (I love comments;) )
